Working closely with long-term client, Village Hotel Club, 3DReid has designed the architecture and interiors of the newly opened Village Hotel in Portsmouth. The first of the new Village Hotel concepts in the UK, the £21m 153 room hotel includes conference facilities and a leisure club with a 20m swimming pool, gym and fitness studios.
3DReid worked closely with the client on the uncomplicated black box architecture, maximising the internal layout whilst shrinking the building by 10%. 3DReid’s design offers all the style, comfort and facilities expected in a Village Hotel on a more compact footprint, saving on land and building costs and creating a blueprint for the brand to expand into more central urban areas or where sites are smaller in size.
The guest bedrooms provide a comfortable, stylish stay in a neat 14sqm of floor space. Vibrant striped wall coverings provide a focal point, with random pops of colour in the bedroom doors, bedside units and desk edgings providing a different but linked feel.
The specially designed St Goban Privilite glass wall, which becomes opaque or clear at the touch of a button, separates the bedroom from the bathroom, allowing borrowed light from the bathroom window to suffuse the interior of the bedroom.
Explains Scott Torrance, Associate Director at 3DReid: “For the public spaces, the client wanted a simple contemporary backdrop to provide flexibility for work, play and dining. Multi-use space was very much a key factor of the brief, to promote a more connected, less formal use of space, with guests “spilling out” into public areas, sitting and using laptops in reception, eating in different places.”
Concrete effect finishes prevail throughout and these are featured on the floor tiling, on feature wall coverings within the restaurant and in a bespoke concrete effect carpet designed especially for the project.
With this focus on maximum flexibility, the usual practice of delineating areas with fixed furniture was discarded in favour of furniture that was completely moveable with no hanging lights to limit the placement of items such as tables. The backdrop of the design was neutral, so the brand can be easily refreshed.
Continues Scott: “Much of the furniture we chose for the project was hot off the press from the 2017 Milan Furniture Show and we also have bold original artwork within the restaurant space.”
One key driver in the design was the new Business Club. 3DReid created a new style corporate events space which moves away from the outdated concept of corporate needs, to a technologically state of the art, flexible hub space that offers bookable rooms and workspace. Clients can buy a monthly subscription which gives them access to anything from the whole conference space to traditional meeting rooms or smaller meeting pods.
The hotel opened in November 2017.
