Dakota Deluxe Scoops Top Architecture Award

3DReid is delighted to announce our recent success at The Glasgow Institute of Architects (GIA) Design Awards 2016 where the Dakota Deluxe hotel in Glasgow won top prize in the Commercial category.

The winners were announced at the GIA’s annual awards dinner which was held in Òran Mór on Friday night and presented by Michal Cohen of Walters and Cohen Architects, chair of this year’s judging panel. The Design Team from our Glasgow Office attended the event with Ross Taylor, who led the project from its inception through to completion, collecting the award.

“The quality, diversity and geographical location of the award submissions continue to inspire, delight and challenge the judges”
Tim Gray,
President of the Glasgow Institute of Architects

Dakota Deluxe was delivered for Evans Dakota Hotels Ltd and is the first in a new chain of hotels from the Dakota brand. The project saw the complete transformation of a vacant 1960’s office building into an 83 bedroom, luxury, boutique hotel complete with bar, restaurant & external terrace.

The GIA which is a Chapter of the professional body for all chartered architects in Scotland, The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS), presents awards for “excellence in architecture by Chapter members” 1.

The GIA Judges, commented: “The re-use of the 1960’s office building on Pitt St offered challenging problem solving on the part of the architect. The exterior façade of brick, with large glazed openings, cleverly adjusts the typology and suggests a higher ceiling height on the ground floor entrance level.

“The architecture of the new hotel is a vast improvement to the urban context and establishes a new destination to an area of Glasgow needing re activation.

“The high budget facilitated high quality materials to respond to materials of adjacent tenement buildings. Interesting rear industrial facade. Internally the building is well considered and the public and private spaces work well together.”
