3DReid were invited to submit an entry for the Edinburgh Pavilion, which is to be on display as part of the Pop-Up Cities Expo. A key event in Scotland’s Festival of Architecture 2016.
Sited on the Mound, at the intersection of two of Edinburgh’s most significant locations, the One O’Clock Gun and the simultaneous Time Ball drop, at Calton Hill, the pavilion is conceived to root itself in the time and space of the city.
We proposed that the pavilion house two complementary exhibitions, focusing on the centres of Science and Art – such as the Universities of Edinburgh, The Festivals, The National Galleries and Library – their history and influence within the wider world and their on-going shaping of the development of the city, the display of which is structured around the soundwaves that emanate from the blast of the gun
At the stroke of one o’clock, the Castle gun is fired and the two pavilion galleries are united – one taking a picture of the Mound and its surroundings, illuminating like a flash, the other emitting a puff of smoke akin to an old studio camera and the castle cannon. The photo is displayed until the next day and a documentary record of the pavilion’s existence is created through the collation of these.
Developed to be delivered to a £30,000 budget and to be easily demountable and transportable, the design of the pavilion offers richness in thought, coupled with deliverability.
